O'Neil auditioned for Canada Idol's season 3 at the beginning of 2005 when she was still a high school student. The singer made it through to the top tier of contestants following the judges' praise for her voice. O'Neil was praised highly from the jury. She suffered massive losses during the top 10 week and Top 9 week of the finals. She was placed on the third row, as well as the in the bottom two. The judges were astonished by the outcome and urged fans to vote for contestants with strong singing talents such as Melissa. O'Neil was never in the top 3 after an impressive string of performance. Judge Werner predicted, after two more stunning performances that O'Neil would be the winner of this year's Canadian Idol competition, as she would be the first woman and youngest in show history in the wake of the September 7 Finals of 2005. O'Neil received a phone call right away from Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin, congratulating on her triumph on Canadian Idol.
