Angela Kaufman

Kauffman, who spent three years in Italy, became known as a portrait artist and has also painted history paintings. The election of Kauffman to Rome's Accademia San Lucia (the Academy of Saint Luca) in 1765 was acknowledgement of her accomplishments as an artist. Angelica Kauffman lived in England for a mere 15 years but she made a significant impact on London's 18th century art scene. Angelica Kauffman was only one of only 2 female founding members of the Royal Academy. Angelica Kauffman was sixty-six years old at the time she passed away on November 5th, 1807. Kauffman relocated into Rome in 1763, was the first introduced to British culture. Her family later moved to Naples and she was able to continue the art of portraiture, while also learning English. Kauffman studied Old Masters there and her initial painting was shipped to London to be displayed in a public exhibition.
